Piet Mondrian

He is recognized as one of the pioneers of abstract painting and founder of "Neoplasticism".
At that time people referred to painting and sculpture as the “plastic arts” to distinguish them from written art forms like music and literature. The term "plastic" referred to plasticity, the condition of stuff that can be formed into other stuff. The term Neoplasticism, coined by Piet Mondrian, was a rejection of the plasticity of the past. It was a word intended to mean “New Art”.
In particular, Mondrian was particularly passionated by Jazz music because he could find so many similarities between that type of rythm and his art. Jazz music is characterized by intuition, organisation but also breaking patterns: as Neoplasticism has no references to natural world, Jazz is free rythm without references to a storyline.

This painting is named "Broadway Boogie-Woogie". It is composed by many coloured squares that recall a mosaic thanks to their brightness. Mondrian's typical black borders disappear in this painting and the squares are juxtaposed. He wants to recreate the chaotic Boogie-Woogie rythm by the trasmission of sensations like vitality. He also wants to represent the rush of Broadway streets, recalling their crisscrosses and the yellow taxis speeding.
